Contracts in the Morning, Robots in the Afternoon

Some days on this tour asked us to think in two very different languages. Day six was one of them. In the morning we sat in Classroom 407 of the International College with the tidy vocabulary of modern business and regulations; by the afternoon we were kneeling on the floor of Classroom 205, coaxing a little robot car to notice a wall before it hit one.

We liked that the day refused to pick just one side of us. It treated us as people who could argue over a clause and solder together a plan in the same afternoon, which felt like a fair picture of the future everyone kept describing here.

The Language of a Fair Deal

The morning began as a class on modern business and regulations and then turned, satisfyingly, into a game. We ran a simulation negotiation built around international rules and commercial contracts, splitting into sides and working line by line toward terms both parties could live with.

It is one thing to read that a contract protects both sides; it is another to feel how much rides on a single sentence when the person across the table wants it worded differently. With Chinese and Korean classmates on the same tour, the exercise carried a quiet realism: this is exactly how business gets done across borders.

Teaching a Car to Look Before It Leaps

After lunch the mood shifted from paperwork to soldering irons and laptops. The Intelligent Robot Challenge Course in Classroom 205 handed each team a small obstacle-avoidance robot car and asked a simple-sounding question: can you make it drive without crashing?

It turned out to be harder and far more fun than it looked. We huddled around a screen with our instructor, tweaking the code a few lines at a time, running the car, watching it misjudge a corner, and going back in to fix it. Every small correction on the laptop showed up seconds later as a slightly braver, slightly smarter machine on the floor.

Race Day on the Classroom Floor

Then came the racing. We cleared a stretch of floor, lined up the cars, and let them go, cheering when one of them threaded past an obstacle it had bumped into ten minutes earlier. There is a particular joy in watching a thing you programmed make a good decision entirely on its own.

By the end of the day the contract and the robot did not feel so far apart. Both were about setting good rules and then trusting them to hold when no one was steering by hand, and both, it turned out, we could learn in a single day in Guangzhou.
