My first "m goi"
Everyone keeps saying I'm the brave one because I do the talking, but honestly Mandarin here feels like home turf. What caught my ear on day two was everything I couldn't understand: the syllables floating around the morning tea tables, softer and rounder than anything I learned. One of the volunteers taught me "m goi" and made me repeat it until the tone stopped embarrassing her.
So when the har gow arrived at breakfast, I looked the server in the eye and said it. She understood. She even answered in Cantonese, way too fast for me, but that first word landed, and something in my chest did a little jump. Our teachers laughed at how proud I looked over one word and a basket of shrimp dumplings.
I started a note on my phone tonight called "phrases collected in Guangzhou." Two entries so far. Mandarin got me onto the plane; I have a feeling Cantonese is what I'll be carrying back through Baiyun Airport.
