Arriving with Curiosity

Before travelling to Guangzhou, I felt excited but also slightly nervous. It was my first time joining an international study programme of this kind, and I knew I would need to adapt quickly to a new culture, language and learning environment. The support from Bournemouth University, the Turing Scheme and Guangzhou College of Commerce made the journey possible and gave me the confidence to take part.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The programme combined academic learning with practical activities. I attended sessions on modern business and regulations, simulation negotiation, cross-border e-commerce, AI marketing and brand visual design. These classes helped me connect ideas from my MSc International Management course with real business examples in China.

The programme also encouraged teamwork, creativity and problem-solving. I enjoyed learning alongside students from different backgrounds and discussing how technology and innovation are shaping modern organisations.

Experiencing Chinese Culture

The cultural activities were equally valuable. I joined a Tai Chi experience class, practised Chinese calligraphy, visited the Guangdong Museum and Canton Tower, and explored Yongqing Fang. These experiences helped me understand Guangzhou not only as a modern business city, but also as a place with a strong cultural identity.

I especially enjoyed seeing how traditional culture and modern innovation exist side by side. This made me more aware of the importance of understanding local culture when working in international business.

Enterprise Visits and New Perspectives

The enterprise visits gave me a clearer view of how organisations in China approach innovation. Visiting the Science and Innovation Zone, the International Nanotechnology Innovation Research Institute and CVTE allowed me to see how research, technology and commercial development are connected.

These visits strengthened my interest in international business and showed me that successful management requires adaptability, cultural awareness and the ability to learn from different markets.

Personal Growth

This trip challenged me in many positive ways. I became more confident communicating with people from different cultural backgrounds, working in a group and managing unfamiliar situations. I also developed greater independence because I had to organise my time, travel and daily life in a new country.

There were moments when the language barrier made communication difficult, but the kindness of GCC staff, local students and my fellow participants helped me overcome this. The experience reminded me that patience, openness and a willingness to ask for help are important intercultural skills.

A Thank You to Everyone Who Made It Possible

I am very grateful to Guangzhou College of Commerce for welcoming us and taking such good care of us throughout the programme. I would also like to thank Bournemouth University and the Turing Scheme for giving me this opportunity.

The two weeks in Guangzhou gave me academic knowledge, cultural understanding, new friendships and memories that I will always value. I returned to the UK with a broader global perspective and greater confidence in my future career. I would strongly encourage other students to take part in international mobility opportunities because the learning goes far beyond the classroom.
